I love trying new techniques in my jewelry crafting and pushing myself to learn new ways of creating.

I recently purchased a torch and have been experimenting with heat coloring copper.

I cut out some leaves from reclaimed copper, pickled it to get it super clean, washed it and started torching.

The results are amazing and so much fun to do but unfortunately once I put a protective coating on, the beautiful colors faded.

My gorgeous reds, blues and purples faded to bronze and gold, darn it!!

I refuse to discard anything once I finish it so I decided to turn my lemons into lemonade by weaving a decorative accent to hang it on.

I added the coral colored glass beads to compliment the colors in the leaf.

While I was in the leaf mood I also wove this open leaf with glass clusters.

Everything I make is created using recycled and upcycled vintage materials, I buy nothing new.

I get everything from estate sales, yard sales and auctions.

All my copper wire is recycled electric wire and several estate sale companies save it for me so my cost is very low.

I thought I would pass this along to the rest of the JMJ community.

I love these organic-looking pieces, Carol! You have really captured vines, leaves and berries in metal and wire. Even when the colors didn’t do what you wanted, you did a great job of making these lovely pieces anyway.

  • Judy Bjorkman says:

Carol, what was the protective coating you used? Have you tried UV resin?

Beautiful beaded wire work Carol! Thank you for sharing.

  • Alysen says:

Carol, some of the color shows through still! I torch colored some brass last year and when I applied Protecta Clear with a paintbrush it seemed like all that I had achieved just disappeared! As yours, some shows but it’s not nearly as stunning as before the coating. I will try Judy Bjorkman’s tip above of UV Resin.

I love how you incorporated wire weaving with the metal smithing. Beautifully done.

  • Carol says:

Judy thank you for your suggestion. I used a polyurethane coating. It was so disappointing to see those beautiful colors fade right before my eyes! I will try the UV resin, can you tell me where to get it? Does it have a special product name? Thanks again, Carol
