I received an old leather skirt as a hand-me-down, but it was tiny and hard to imagine any adult wearing it. So I set my mind to figuring out how I could use it for my jewelry.

The idea of a layered flower popped into my head, so I came up with a pattern and cut out the blossoms from the old skirt. I sewed them together, with some vibrant seed beads at the center, and hung the new pendant on a string of peach, lime, and clear beads.

The bright seed beads with the understated deep teal flower is unexpected, but it gives the necklace lots of vivacity. It’s one of my favorites now!

What a great way to recycle those hand me downs. Who would have thought and unwearable skirt would become a beautiful necklace.

That leather skirt was a terrific gift when looked at with new eyes.
And think how many wonderful flowers will result from its bounty.
Nice work.

Thanks so much everyone! It’s so wonderful to receive such encouragement! I think I’m going to keep salvaging unwearable clothing this way–the possibilities are endless!
And Kim, I would love to share, I just need to figure out how I can do that best. 🙂

Here’s what I used: http://adorningcreation.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/leather-flower-stencil.jpg

I just cut out two of the larger flower, and one of the smaller, and sewed them together. You can resize the picture and make them whatever size you like!
