Brass Book Hinge Necklace

I visited my sister on the way home from a trip recently, and I mentioned I was looking for some old photographs to use for tags for my vintage repurposed jewelry collection.

She showed me a very old photo album my brother-in-law had found and offered it to me.

The photos were perfect for my collection but I also noticed the brass hinge connecting the covers.

One was missing but I pried off the remaining one and used it as a focal point for a necklace.

I added a faceted blue chalcedony to the bottom and yellow chalcedony as a drop along with freshwater pearl accents on a vintage chain.

Vintage photos used as tags

I love the idea of repurposing non-jewelry components into my jewelry designs.

Have you considered making copies of the old photos for your jewelry cards, and preserving the originals? Plus you could have unlimited copies and wouldn’t run out cards for your jewelry.

  • Sonja Horzelenberg says:

Love the look, also the vintage tags!

  • The old photographs make a charming way to display jewelry. Making a one of a kind necklace is a great way to salvage the old book hinge.

Dorothy I did not. Thanks for the suggestion because there were some photos that were my favorites.

    Thanks Sonja!

Thanks Rena. It was good to get use out of all of the pieces. I have the covers saved for collage work.

Thank you Rosa. I am doing a outdoor show in a couple of weeks and hope to sell some.

    Thanks LuElla.

While I loved your necklace, what really caught my eye was the photo cards for you necklaces. What an amazing marketing idea!

  • Liz says:

Thank you Nita. I did a festival this past weekend and got a good response about the packaging.
