Dye Leaching Out of Stones

jmj-question-mark-teal-on-parchment-500x500-jI recently bought myself some lovely deep red dyed snakeskin jasper. I have no trouble with dyed stones for my own use, as I love the rich colours.

However, when I left this strand on my bead mat for a few days awaiting inspiration, some of the dye leached out into the bead mat. Does anyone know of a way to “set” the colour so it doesn’t stain my skin or clothes when I wear the jewelry?

Should I perhaps soak the stones in water before using them, to rinse out any excess dye? Has anyone else run into this problem?
