Circles in Circles Pendant
by Zoraida.
(Patchogue, New York USA)
I was trying to find use for some circular pieces of copper I received as a gift from a construction site. I had previously created a necklace out of the sections of pipes from this same batch but still have a lot of what my architect friend said were spacers. They look like washers, but what do I know.
They are perfectly round, flat and a little distorted so I had to hammer them flat. I spread a few out on the back of a mouse pad (sorry for all the cat hair on the photo, my cat loves to sleep on the mouse pad). Finally, I settled on a pattern that looked like Celtic knots.
I wound the circles with wire, used a patina, made another circle around that to make it heavier and created this pendant.

It is fascinating what the patina has done to change the whole look of the circle washers. Great use of recycled materials.

Construction materials

Having owned a construction company for 15 years (until August 31, 2011 when we sold and I am a full time jewelry designer now….yippeeeeee), I always got a little weired out when I saw them throwing out the treasure trove of materials which I just knew could be used for something creative.
I’m so glad your architect friend took the effort to get these items for you. I feel a little better now knowing at least a few things have been used instead of filling a land fill.
Oh, and they are absolutely amazing!!!

I absolutely LOVE this! Celtic knot motifs are always popular, and I really love the blue/green patina you put on the copper!
Would you mind sharing how to get that color of patina? (If you would rather not, it is fully understandable, as you have something very unique here – please don’t mind that I asked.)
I’m going to raid my husbands tool boxes and see what I can find! LOVE this idea of using recycled industrial items, but in a pretty way!
