Gold Over Brass Jewelry Top Coat? - Discussion on Jewelry Making Journal

I purchased a beautiful pendant that is real gold plated over brass.

It’s unique, and I would like to prevent the gold from rubbing off over time. Is spray acrylic coating safe for gold?

Many items specify polished metals, but not specifically gold, and I would hate the ruin the piece by using the wrong product.

Appreciate any feedback.
Thank you

I’m guessing here, but I would think twice before spraying anything on your piece of jewelry. Even if it protects the gold, sooner or later the spray coating itself may start to peel off, here and there. Then, if it looks “ragged,” you will have the job of figuring out how to peel off the remaining spray coat.
You might start by waxing the piece — if you have any Renaissance wax, that would be a good place to start, since it is used in museums to preserve items of value. It would be easy to replace the wax coating as needed.
    Good luck! Judy Bjorkman
