Best Way to Polish Jewelry Without a Tumbler? - Discussion on Jewelry Making Journal

I am starting to work with sterling silver wire and looking for a more professional finish. Do you have a method for polishing wire/hammered wire to shine without a mechanical tumbler, eg with wire wool?

Thanks!

Pat

  • Hi Pat! Thanks for asking. If you go to How Do I Finish and Get Shine Without a Tumbler? – you’ll find several good tips and techniques below that post.

    I hope this helps! 🙂

As the article Rena posted states, steel wool is great in the 0000 grade. You do want to wear a mask though as the particles do become airborne. Pro polish pads are great, but you need to go further for a mirror finish. My preference is the polishing papers sold by Rio Grande. I cut them in small squares. They are graduated from 400 grit to 8000 grit. You can find them here

I am sure you can find them elsewhere. You do have to have an account with Rio, but all you need is your resale license. They give a beautiful mirror finish.

    Pennybrite is great too!!

Do you have buffers to make your fingernails shine over there? Look in beauty supply store for them. Or a chamois that is used to dry off cars & shine them? Either will work.
