Fall Fever From Junkyard Finds
by Susan Anderson.
This is my favorite time of the year! Much of my work is done in the earthy fall palette, so I would like to share a few of my new pieces for the season.
During the year I like to take a few trips to the local junkyard. I basically just search the ground looking for inspiration pieces for creating jewelry. When I get home, I dump everything into a bucket and cover it with water, then let it sit for a few months.
After that everything is removed and set out to dry for and get more exposure to the elements. These pieces will sit for a few more weeks. Once happy with the beautiful rusted look, the parts are sorted and go to my studio.
Then the fun begins, it is like doing a jigsaw puzzle, assembling parts together to create an interesting designs. When a look is settled upon, the next step is to seal the individual parts to keep the rust look from falling apart.
It is amazing where you can find materials when you open your mind to unusual opportunities. Don’t let the junkyard be an untapped resource!
