Consignment Split with a Salon Owner

A beauty salon can be a good place to sell your jewelry.

Salon customers tend to be interested in fashion and accessories, and the relationship that beauticians / salon owners have with their clients enables them to promote your jewelry very effectively.

Once a salon owner agrees to display your jewelry in their shop, you can suggest a consignment percentage.

The salon owner’s percentage needs to be high enough to give them incentive to market your jewelry to their clients.

For salons, I would recommend a consignment split anywhere from 80/20 to 60/40 – with the jewelry artist getting the 60 to 80%, and the salon owner getting the 20 to 40%. (Learn more about jewelry consignment percentages.)

Some salon owners are thrilled simply to be compensated with jewelry when they sell your work through their shop. It can be a good way for them to acquire jewelry for themselves as well as to give as gifts.

If they prefer to be compensated with jewelry, you can use the same 20 to 40% consignment scale to come up with a dollar amount for their “free jewelry shopping spree” from you.

Of course, anyplace you leave your jewelry on consignment, be sure that both you and the shop owner sign a consignment agreement

You’ll also need to set up a system for keeping track of your consigned jewelry.

The salon may need for you to provide a display for your jewelry. Be sure you also itemize any displays that you leave with the shop in your consignment agreement.

And because airborne chemicals, nail dust, etc. in a salon tend to make jewelry tarnish quickly, you may want to provide a closed jewelry case with no-tarnish strips in it. Change the no-tarnish strips every few months to keep them effective, and consider wiping down your jewelry with a Sunshine cloth once a month or so to keep it sparkling.
