Which Wire Does What?

I have just started jewellery making and wanted any tips on the best wire to buy. I made a few rings and wore them to test them out, but they turn black after a while.

Which wire is the best to make wired jewellery?

Also, I tested making a bracelet with 12 gauge wire, I loved the bracelet but it kept bending and catching onto my clothes.

Which thick wire would you use to make thick bracelets but be able to wrap them without them looking dented like the 12 gauge wire has?

Your suggestions would be great.
