How Many Tools Do I Need?
by Vicki Todd.
Tools – they’re not just for Dad’s garage anymore.
Show me a beader, and I’ll show you at least a dozen pairs of pliers. So the big question is, what are the tools I HAVE to have?
The answer is simple: How many do you want?
Basic Tools
I Can’t Do Without
As an avid beader, I’ve found that having the right pliers and other tools is essential.
When I travel I find these faithfuls with me every stop of the way: Nippers – ONLY to be used for cutting wire and stringing wire; flat nose and round nose pliers will accomplish almost any task.
The Importance of Tool Quality
What have I learned over time? Buy the best quality tools that you can afford. A moderately priced set will help you create beautiful, professional looking pieces.
The right tool can make or break your personal mental status while working on a project.
When I’m investing in tools, I look at it as just that. If I leave marks on my wire or have jagged edges on my stringing projects, it’s going to lessen the value of the finished item.
Marking Your Tools
Once I’ve added to my collection, I make sure to mark the tools as mine.
Since several of us shop at our local bead store, we all have the same tools. A quick swipe with a coat of nail polish for your first initial on the metal part of the tool makes for an easy way to determine ownership.
After all, when making your investment you want to make sure it remains yours.
What’s Really in My Toolbox?
About 12 pairs of pliers, different sizes and qualities.
Let’s face it – I love my tools and add to the collection when the need or opportunity arises.
I’ve actually moved them to a small travel makeup case for storage.
This is another good way to protect your tools. After you use them, put them back in your carrier.
You’ll be very happy you did the next time you need that flat nose set for making crimps.
