Queen of the Nile

Polymer clay faux stones, in gold polymer clay bezel settings

Polymer clay faux stones, in gold polymer clay bezel settings

This piece began as a challenge to the members of Aussiepolyclayers – an Australian polymer clay internet forum.

The challenge was ‘faux stones’ so, never having tried to make imitation stones from polymer clay, I entered the challenge.

Using the Carol Blackburn book, I made up cabochons of fake agate (onyx).

I was quite pleased with them, and even more pleased when they were voted the winner of the challenge!

But then came the question: what to do with them?

I put them aside for two months while I worked on other things and let ideas percolate through my mind.

Finally, I was ready to sit down and set them. I made the bezel settings from gold polymer clay, and also the small beads.

Once cured, I used Rub ‘n’ Buff antique gold to give a more aged feel.

Joining the small lengths of chain between each piece was a real pain, but worth it in the end.

I called it Queen of the Nile because I felt, and have been told, that it has an Egyptian feel to it.

Oh my goodness, this is spectacular! It’s hard to believe the stones and settings are all polymer clay.

Incredible, stunning necklace. The chain connectors may have been a pain to do, but wow – how perfectly they pull everything together.

Love this piece – thanks for sharing!

WoW Queen of the nile
by: Kate

This is a WOW of a piece. I really thought that you had made the plaque the cabochons are set upon. But no – it was the cabochons themselves.
Wow, they are so realistic. The whole necklace is great and worthy of the title Queen of the Nile.

Awesome!

I LOVE your cabachons! I’m sure no one would suspect that they’re not real. I do have a question – what did you use to back the stones (they placques they are mounted on)? Are they clay too? You’re stoking my creativity fire! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks so much for the lovely comments. And to answer your question, Karen, the mountings are gold polymer clay, too – everything but the linking chains and toggle are made from polymer clay.
