Mom's Garden Necklace

My mother always had a garden of flowers and taught us many lessons on life through it. She taught us to plan as we went through the seed catalog, the joy of anticipation, and that by taking care of those who need our help, we create a better world.

We would make ornaments for the garden out of rocks, shells, cement and wood. The necklace has a handmade ceramic flower for the focal piece and bits of stone and shell like the “surprises” in her garden.

The two salmon colored beads on either side are made by Kazuri, a women’s cooperative in Africa and the striped cylinder shaped beads are recycled paper also made by a cooperative in Uganda because mom always supported charities in Africa.

The brass flower dangle and leaf clasp are the “ends” and fruits of our work. I’ll always think of my mother when I wear this necklace.
