Left Handed Jewelry Tools?

Left Handed Jewelry Tools? - Discussion on Jewelry Making Journal

I have a friend who is left handed.

He gets frustrated using jewelry pliers and jewelry tools for right handed people.

Does anyone make jewelry tools for left handed people?

If they do where can I buy them? Thanks!

  1. Hi Anne, thanks for asking about left-handed jewelry pliers & other tools. I’m a left-handed jewelry artist myself. At the moment, I can’t think of a single tool that makes a difference whether you use it in your left hand or right hand. In fact, I’m somewhat ambidextrous, so I often use most of my tools comfortably in either hand.

I’m guessing that what your friend actually needs is tools that are either better quality, or that are better suited for the types of jewelry he’s making. I hope this helps!

  2. Ditto. I’m totally left handed. Unlike sewing, cooking, etc., jewelry tools aren’t “handed.” As Rena suggested, he may need better quality tools.

I’m also a lefty with ambidextrous tendencies. I do find, however, that some tools may be easier to wield for right-handers, the big one of note is the “wrap-n-tap” pliers. By and large, the issue seems to only come up when using certain types of pliers. My adjustment when I choose to use my dominant hand has been to roll or wrap in the opposite direction.
As noted, finding the best tools for your materials and jewelry style is a key element to ergonomic happiness and safety.
