Jeweler’s Torch: Scared to Light It! Can You Help Me Get Started?

jmj-question-mark-green-on-lavendar-200x200-jI finally went out and bought a jeweler’s torch, which looks like it has a HUGE area where flame would come out and I’m scared to death to even light it.

Anybody have any good advice on how to start using it, i.e. practicing closing jump rings, placing two discs together, etc?

Where do you work with yours and what kind of surface do I need?

I have only a card table in my apartment.

I have some flux paste but don’t know how to use it, either. I used to do stain glass work so I get the basic concept (but stained glass doesn’t require a TORCH)…I needed flux, patina, all sorts of materials. For jewelry work, can someone tell me what the MINIMUM I need to get started is? I really just want to layer metals together for now.

Any help would be so appreciated!

Thanks very much!
