Many suppliers sell wire by the ounce, not by by the foot or cm.

So with this handy chart below you can get a good estimate of how many ounces of sterling silver wire you need for a project.

  1. Thank you Rena, this is very helpful. I always order in bulk and the catalogue gives me the length in feet per ounce. I then divide the feet into inches to figure out the cost.

    This is helpful, thanks.

However, I would have liked to have seen the mm wire size along with the gauge size – which I believe is used mainly in America and not so much in Europe. I rarely use the American sizes and am forever having to look back … what gauge is such and such in mm. This chart is therefore partly in metric and partly not… any chance of an update? Pretty please. 😀

Thank you for this site… I am finding it very interesting and useful.

  3. Thanks so much for your great suggestion, MrsRainbow!

I’ve just added the mm size in the wire gauge column.

    I hope this helps! 🙂

  8. Lecia Woessner says:

I’m just wondering if the “ounces” that are used in your chart are the same as a troy ounce? I may just be overthinking this & confusing myself but I’d be really appreciative if you could answer that for me! Thank you, Lecia

  9. Lecia,
Yes. Rena’s chart is based on Troy ounces.
