How Do I String Pearls or Beads Without Wire?

I have always used wire to string my pearl and bead necklaces, but I think sometimes the finished necklace would drape better if strung on thread.

I don’t know what to buy. Do I need a special needle and specific thread?

Should I attach each end to a clasp with crimp beads like I do with wire?
