How Do I Judge the Quality of Chain?

I purchased some chains at Michael’s a while back to use as the necklace part to a soutache pendant.

After test driving it a couple times the metal in the chain looked corroded.

Thankfully I hadn’t sold it. I took the chain off and replaced it with a string of beads.

I would love to incorporate chains in my designs, but now I’m a bit worried.

What should I look for?
