Question About Embellishing Shells

question-mark-green-on-lavendarHello there,
I am writing for suggestions on a shell jewelry project.

When I collect shells at the shore I usually go for the not so perfect…I leave those for the tourists. So recently when I uncovered my shell collection I found a few jars of ‘mellow’ shells. They are smooth, mostly oblong or triangular, and range in colors from rusty to cream. All are without holes for hanging.

Guess I’ll be looking for my mini drill next or practice some of Rena’s wire wrapping techniques.

I have ideas for some of the detailed ones but a lot are pretty plain. I’ve seen fancy shells that are kinda edged in gold and that is a little more than I can do.

But I was wondering if there is any way to apply and wipe off a metallic wash so the shapes and details are highlighted?

Or, maybe making it look metallic with some patina?

Imagine a beautiful Mermaid lost a piece of shell from her necklace and it finally washed up on the beach. That’s what I’m going for.

Thanks so much,

Pat Quimby
