Crocheted Wire Cuff Bracelet – Plus Helpful Tips and Tools

Inspired by another JMJ reader’s post on her crocheted wire bracelet, I searched and found an excellent tutorial on YouTube to learn the basics.

It was harder than it looked; I worked multiple samples with craft wire before launching into Argentium silver wire.

Unfortunately I had to waste 100 feet of silver wire before working out all the design and technical issues. The final result is what I call “Netted Treasure” in Argentium silver and gold filled wire with Swarovski white crystal pearls woven around 2 memory wire loops.

I’d like to share how I managed the dispensing of the wire and tools that were helpful for crocheting and weaving.

Wire dispensing spool:

Wire Spool Setup

The wire I had was coiled, so I wound it around a ribbon spool. I took a plastic ziplock bag and cut a hole in the bottom for the wire to dispense and holes in the center of the bag so I could put some craft wire through the bag and the spool. By suspending the spool with the craft wire, it allows for freer rolling when I pulled on the wire from the bottom. It so happened I have stacking wire shelves (in-boxes) which allow me to use mini clips to anchor this bag so I could pull the wire without the bag flopping around.

Useful Tools for Wire Crochet

  • Locking stitch markers: Marker reminds me which side will be the top side. While either side can be the top side, I just want consistency while working the piece.
  • Bamboo knitting needle: Used to enlarge the loops on each row to facilitate the crochet hook going through from the next row.
  • Mini screw driver: From those glasses repair kits you can buy at the drugstore for $2, the small flat head helps to create space between wires when I want to weave a wire between the two wires.
  • Loop hook: Handy for pulling wire through or reworking tension on a loop.
  • Crochet hook: Had read somewhere that it was best to use a steel crochet hook to work with silver as the aluminum hooks will contaminate the silver. I don’t know what this means or if true but decided to get the steel hook and got the largest size available (size 00 or 3.5mm)

Each cuff uses about 25 feet of wire and takes 4 hours to complete.
