Cataloguing and Storing: I Need a Better System

I run a small online business and I’m getting to the point where I have a decent sized inventory of pieces. I feel like my way of cataloguing and storing them is not working well anymore.

When I receive an order, I have to sort through too many things to find the right item. I need a more efficient way to find my items quickly.

How does everyone handle their inventories?

Do you assign an item # to them and put them away numerically?

Do you separate out just by type (earrings/necklaces/bracelets)? What type of containers do you use for storage?

I would appreciate any suggestions!
