I make teeny origami models and combine them with wire jewelry. Many artists I’ve seen make cranes for this—cranes are so iconic, after all. But the pointy wings can be so uncomfortable. Then a friend came to me and asked me to make a necklace for someone and it had to be a crane. What to do?

Here is a flat crane, wired into a hoop. I still have to play around with wires on the back for more support, but you get the idea.

I found inspiration in Rena’s Industrial Double Hoop earrings. I thought I would make one hoop and wire a flat crane (rather than one with the wings pulled out) into it.

Here is a picture of a crane earring. The model is three dimensional and the wings, pointy as they are, can be uncomfortable.

I’m still working on the idea, because my friend hasn’t yet chosen her paper. But the concept is solid, and I’ve already designed something else, another pendant with a different origami model, and put that on my Etsy site, PapergirlinCT.
