New Jewelry Design: Do you plan it or wing it?

My Question: I am just curious how people approach their jewelry making designs- do you draw sketches and plan your design, then execute it?

Do you select materials, then begin to put it together without a formal plan? Do you start, stop, walk away, come back later with an idea?

I never really know what direction I’m going in when I start a piece and I’m OK with that, but I am interested in hearing about how others go through the process.
