These earrings feature electroplated quartz points with brass components from a vintage necklace, amethyst beads and hand-forged gold-filled ear hooks. Like most people I started making jewellery with inexpensive materials.

This was back in the days before youtube videos or beading magazines so I was self-taught by trial and error. Later, I took silvercraft evening classes and learned soldering, forging and stone-setting.  I made jewellery with semi-precious beads and silver, and rarely touched my glass beads. Now I am happy to mix real gemstones with quality glass and base metal, if it serves the design.

The brass components had been in my stash for years. I was wire wrapping some quartz points when I suddenly remembered them, and the rest pretty much made themselves. I textured the top hoop with a ball-pein hammer. When I went to attach a standard ready-made ear hook, it didn’t feel right so I made some gold-filled simple hooks.
