A Moth Is Born
by Terri Wlaschin.

This necklace began in a class with Betty Stephan and there was no moth in the middle. But I couldn’t get a moth out of my head after I took the partially finished necklace home. I pondered cutting it so I could insert a moth body.
Here’s my usual process when I want to make a change that dramatic (really even on small changes if I am honest). I ponder and ponder while my stomach flutters and my body tenses up. Then, without warning, I just do it. But that’s not what happened here.
I went through the back door on this one and snuck up on myself. I created the moth BEFORE I cut the necklace. I figured if I did all the work in making the moth, it would make it so much easier to cut the necklace. It didn’t. So I pondered and pondered and my stomach fluttered and body tensed up. Then, without warning, I cut it. That, my friends is how this moth necklace was born.
