Was I Sold Low Quality Gemstones? - Discussion on Jewelry Making Journal

I recently purchased some labradorite and black agate gemstones from a local individual; they were friendly and chatty.

However, upon taking a closer look at the stones I had purchased, I have two questions.

My first question is:

The labradorite I purchased looks dull and gray, you can see a slight shine, but it’s mostly dull.

Is it a lower quality, or can you cut the stone to reveal its schiller?

My second question is:

I also purchased some black agate from this person, but.. it doesn’t look like any black agate, or any agate for that matter, that I’ve purchased before. It just kind of looks and feels like a river rock.

Is it really agate?

Thank you.
