Twisting Leather: What’s the Best Way?

I am twisting a piece of leather cord with a smooth fabric cord and need to know how to keep them twisted together.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My husband suggested when keeping it taught varnish it, but I might lose flexibility.
