TSummers: Lake Glass Ring 1

I recently moved back by the lake (Lake Huron). I grew up in the area where I live now, and have always loved the beach and the water. As a child, I enjoyed looking for shells and pretty stones, but now, as a jewellery artist, of course I’m looking for neat things to make jewellery with!

I find when I go down there I don’t know where to look first, out at the shimmering water, or down in the sand for treasures, so for the first few minutes my eyes seem to constantly go back and forth from one to the other! 🙂

Recently I found this piece of brown lake glass. It obviously seems to be the former top of a bottle, but right away I saw that the curve sat nicely on my finger as a ring, even though the sides are asymmetrical.

I had this copper filigree ring base which I thought complimented it beautifully, and it was soft enough that I could shape it to fit the inside of the glass. Then I found a vintage copper earring in my stash, which I took apart for embellishing the top of the ring.

Again, because it is copper, it was soft enough to shape. I decided to add a bit of a turquoise patina, just using paint and sealer. Instantly, the leaves transformed to resemble instead the crashing waves that tumbled this lovely piece of glass.

This ring is for sale, but it sure does fit nicely on my finger … 😀
