I scatter a few dozen on the table for people to handle. Half of those who try one one purchase it. I need to re-organize. I am partially blind after two strokes and am not up to selling at craft fairs. For now I’m looking for opportunities to teach and demonstrate what I’ve learned. I sell enough to almost break even. At some point, God willing, I’ll make a small profit again. I still enjoy making and giving away rings to friends. Great idea with the treasure chest Rena. Thanks. I’ve learnde a great deal here.

This is a great idea, which I think I’ll try for my next jewellery party. I’ve had ‘cheap & cheerful’ earrings shown on a stand, but they don’t seem to go as well as I’d have thought. Having a ‘specials’ box might do the trick 😀

I used old leather cases and boxes, filling some with earrings, some with pendants and others with necklaces. Earrings and pendants were hooked to a small coin envelope that I had stamped with a design. Larger coin envelopes were used for necklaces with a corner slit on each side to hang the chain and the rest of the necklace fitted neatly into the envelope. I displayed the envelopes standing up straight with probably 50 items in each case. The entire 2 day show people were rummaging through the cases, with lots of purchases being made. It was the best show sale wise I ever had.

So follow Rena’s suggestion- this is definitely a great sale generator as well as a good way to attract people to your booth.

It’s worth a try. I am taking everything you say in your book to heart. The one thing I’m working on is getting some items at a lower price so that I can appeal to my market. I make handmade beads and sell in San Francisco 3-4 times a week. I need to simplify my display. Thank you for all your wisdom.

People really enjoyed going through the treasures and felt they were getting a surper deal.
This is also a good way to use left over beads from a project and everyone is happy with the tresure hunt surprise.

That is a really neat trunk, I bet it is a real eye-catcher, and I love how you packaged each pair with your business cards…it makes them “look” like expensive earrings at a great price.
I will have to think about doing this at one of our shows and see how it is received. Thank you for the great idea!

I started using a “bargain trunk” in my booth last fall and it’s been a terrific way to get rid of older inventory and make some quick money. I bought a jewelry box that looks like a miniature trunk from Pier One, so it’s velvet-lined and nice looking. I bought cello bags to put my earring cards in (helps to distinguish them from the rest of the inventory). I also included some inexpensive glass bracelets that didn’t sell well. I priced everything at $7 ea or 3 for $15. Nothing in the trunk cost me more than probably $2, so I still make a nice profit and I don’t have old inventory sitting around.

I place it near where customers stand when I’m writing up their order and people can hardly resist digging through the goodies. I’d say at least half of my sales include something from the bargain trunk. Now that I’ve cleared out a lot of old designs that were hanging around, I use the trunk to get rid of beads I bought and then ended up not using, so I don’t have money sitting there in beads I changed my mind about.

It’s been a great money maker! Thanks for the great idea!

I had a $5 earring box for some earrings I thought nobody would buy. My very first craft fair was in November and I thought people would like the better quality, higher priced earrings more that were on typical earring card turn-a-bout display, but most headed for my $5 box. So, I think I will graduate upward and put a nicer box or trunk with better quality earrings in it such as you’ve done. Thanks for the tip!

I was at a boutique 3 weeks ago to try this and I had many people stop by and sold 5 pairs.

This was my last boutique before Christmas and I reduced all my prices. Necklaces $10.00 less and everything else $10.00 less. My feeling was that folks came in with maybe $20.00 to spend and decide how they were going to spend it (benefits were going to the girls catholic high school).

I had crafters on either side of me who both recommended Etsy and Pinterest. I must now decide whether to continue trying for a little while longer. I love making things but when folks can go to Kohls, Target, etc and gets things for a couple bucks it’s hard for handmade things to compete.
Sounding off – Sue

All in ziplock bags with business cards, all in silver colored metal recycled chocolate boxes. For the earrings and kids necklaces it works great, for the adult necklaces the sales are much less than when I had them on open display and priced the same – maybe because adults percieve less value in ziplocked necklaces?

Hi Jeanne,
The marketer in me says try again with a different vessel. 🙂

I took a quick glance at your site and your work does not look like something I would find in a wicker picnic basket, even at a deep discount. People may even be surprised to find $10-$18 pieces in a picnic basket. My guess is they find that high, even though for your work it’s a steal, but the picnic basket sets a certain expectation.

The trunk that Rena uses in this example is interesting. It looks vintage and unusual even though it’s a simple little trunk, it has a richness about it. It stirs up some curiosity and some expectation that whatever is inside of it is good and worth having.

For your pieces I would go with a shallow lead crystal bowl. Maybe sit it on a mirror or shine a light on it, or just something with an interesting shape and some richness so that people want to see what’s inside, then they’re pleasantly surprised at the discount they find.

The show itself was a total bust: 107 degrees F so there was hardly anyone there. I did sell some earrings though. Then last Saturday I went to the Farmer’s market from 8-12. I don’t usually sell much there, but since it only costs $3 and is close by I usually just set out pendants and rings for impulse buys.

This time I took the earring box and sold a pair of those also. I love it. I think it has increased my earring sales and I like the fact they’re all in bags (looking good on my new handmade cards) so they’re not getting tarnished like they were on the rack. And they’re so easy to transport!

Unfortunately, it has not worked for me at all! I use a wicker picnic basket with a similar discount for multiple purchases. My less expensive earrings ($10 – $18) are in baggies on a business card with my inventory number only. Most people just do a quick “fly by” look and move on and a couple have purchase only 1 pair.

Maybe it’s my earrings(?). I haven’t even made any more earrings in this range for the basket. Perhaps I should lower my discount or try a different display container like the copper bowl, or a silver, glass,… bowl.
It is a very convenient way to keep the earrings safely in one place without hanging them individually and great for set up/break down.

Take this for what it’s worth, 1 person’s experience only in the upeer midwest.
If anyone else finds this successful please let us know if you try anything different that made it work for you.

I do do a similar sort of thing for a simple pendants – piece of wire, bead, little dangle, (I use alot of orphan lampwork beads that I’ve gotten in auctions, etc.), I put anywhere between $12-$20 price on them and throw them in a bowl with a sign saying “pendant or keychain”, people love to rummage through, finding treasures. I hear comments like “oh, this would be a cute ceiling fan pull or a zipper pull or a dangle on a backpack”, etc. There have been times I’ve made more money out that little bowl than anything else! I’m going to do the box, its a natural accompaniment to my bowl!

I find that it’s much easier if everything in the basket has the same price, and that offering the price breaks for 2 pair and 3 pair of earrings really bumps up the sales.

And rather than marking the pricing on each earring packet, I put a sign inside the lid of the basket announcing the price breaks.

Thanks for the great idea! I have a very large old copper bowl that I think I’ll use for mine. How do you charge for a random collection of earrings? All one price, or individually priced? Thanks again for an awesome site.
