Hi, Gari, it’s best to use a cup bur. But if you don’t have one, you could probably just use a piece of steel wool to smooth the wire end that will go through the ear piercing.

And thanks for asking about metal dust. Breathing or being exposed to any metal dust – even in small amounts – is something to avoid. Even fine metal dust particles can be a health hazard. Be sure to use goggles, breathing protection, and proper ventilation, especially since you’ll be doing a lot of cup bur work.
