And what would best be used as a clear coat/sealer…

Leave enough space on the end of your dowel, say a hand’s width. Now, holding the dowel you can spray all sides of multiple beads at one time. Once they’re evenly coated, insert the empty end of the dowel in some craft foam (so the dowel stands upright) and let the beads dry. You can put more than one dowel in the foam at the same time, provided the beads don’t touch each other. Use the same method for spray sealing your beads.

Not sure if I’d use a spray paint, especially if you plan on selling the pieces. Check out Interweaves’s store as they have some videos regarding coloring. Gail Crosman Moore comes to mind. Also see B’Sue and Miss Ficklemedia for patina solutions that they carry. Good luck.

From what I have read, you can color it with oil paint, vegetable dye, or even powdered eye shadow. This would not require sealing. (Would probably take a lot longer than spray painting though).

Any oils or debris on the surface will make the paint chip. I’ve never spray painted beads before, but I have done some large pendants and had some great results. You definitely want to finish with a clear acrylic sealer though. Another option, with metal beads, would be patina inks. They are specially formulated for use on metal!
