What great comments. The discussions are as diversed as the designers and their modus operandi! Such fun. I can’t say I have a line, unless the seasonal designs and healing gemstones can be considered separately. I do display them separately, but I don’t think they are two lines of designs? Any idea of separating them totally or not?

Yes, there is the general grouping of items. But at the same time, it really depends on how YOU define the words.

I have two lines: Healing Gemstone and Spirit Expression. The first is standard gemstone wire-wrapped and knotted jewelry. The second is more spiritual items. Gemstones are the focus in both, but there are distinct differences between the lines. HG is jewelry, while SE is composed of meditation beads/rosaries and wire-wrapped keys. The keys sometimes have messages engraved/stamped on them. Everything I make is part of the Caring Crystals “collection”.

That said, Kate also has a point: “line” tend to reflect styles. Items can (probably) be mixed and matched due to some sort of similarity.

Is a “Jewellery Line” the entire work of Jewellery I have or is that the “Jewellery Collection?” Which one is the full body of work and which one is the mini-series of work (i.e. Spring/Summer, Fall/Winter)?

We really don’t have a “line,”and it’s something I’ve been thinking about designing for fall.

I think of a jewelry line as something that has two things: some unifying characteristic, like color or stone or metals or theme, and a complete set of pieces. To me, it’s not a “line” if all you have is necklaces; I want to see bracelets, earrings, and possibly other jewelry pieces that can all be worn together.

I think your question about a jewelry line is certainly a valid one. This is something that has captured my attention and even concern from time to time. I have been making jewelry for a few years and have struggled with what direction to guide my jewelry, how to develop my style and achieve what I feel is my “line”, my signature, jewelry that when someone looks at it my name is brought to mind.

I know that right now I have a lot of styles of jewelry I like to make, because I like to wear a lot of different styles. I have a hard time pinning myself down to a certain style therefore my “line” is very eclectic. But I think as I have looked back over my creations and as they have evolved over time, I do see elements, little flairs and techniques, that give each of my pieces a look that defines them as mine, that links them as being of the same creator.

For some artists/designers this line may be more defined and obvious and somewhat narrow or limited; for others it can be vast and quite inclusive. Somewhere in between those two extremes is probably where I land and keeping it toward the more limited would certainly make designing easier because the guidelines are narrow – fewer choices, less time making decisions, having a clearer goal in sight, etc.

I welcome anyone’s thoughts. Thank you!

Both my chainmail pieces, which is my focus now, and my beadwork which I don’t turn out as much anymore. I’m currently designing a ‘collection’ of pieces inspired by Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. This I don’t see staying in my line forever though, it’s just a special ‘collection’ that’ll be around for a few months.

You can also have a seasonal line of jewelry; my summer line, my fall line (collection) as so on.
Other designers including myself may refer to a ‘line of jewelry’ as being the turquoise collection, or the amber ‘line’ of jewelry.

I’ve always considered a ‘line’ as a line of jewelry all set out; now why did you create a line using the pieces you did? Did they all have the same theme, color, appearance, feeling? If so, you’ve just displayed your “line” of jewelry.

Your jewellery line will be the collection of jewellery you create and put out there. It doesn’t mean you always have to use all the same beads or elements, but there should be a thread of cohesion throughout the display. If you use mostly fw pearls now, then you already have that. But maybe you’ll do a piece without any pearls in it, but it’s linked in another way to your other pieces – maybe the style of the piece, maybe there’s something to do with colour, the way you use metals, etc. As you go along and do more and more jewellery, your personal style develops, and will be evident in your collection (another word for line is collection).

Take a look at your jewellery, and see if you can see cohesiveness between the pieces. That’s what fashion designers do when they put out a collection of garments, by the way. If you’ve seen a fashion show, you’ll notice some similarities between the pieces that are coming down the runway.

Or you can have a line that includes several smaller collections. For instance, your line may be a mostly fw pearl line, but you may develop smaller collections featuring the different colours of fw pearls, or you may do a very elegant collection, and a more casual or bohemian collection. They’re all a part of your line.

That’s what I do. I decided, because I want to have something to offer as many retailers or customers as possible, and because I like to design in different ways and with different materials, to have diverse collections within my line. But there still needs to be that line of cohesion running through it. And that’s something I’ve learned more and more to discern when I look at one of my pieces. Does it “fit” with my line, and more importantly, with who I am in this moment as an artist. Is it up to its full potential as a piece at this point?

I hope this helps. It sounds like you’re already on the right track! Maybe you could show us some pictures of your jewellery some time. 🙂
