Rita, thanks for mentioning that the polyurethane product created the antiqued crackle look. Have fun with your new origami designs, and we’d love to see how you turn them into jewelry! 🙂

I made a lot of paper jewelry in the 90’s. I used a spray on polyurethane product from Krylon as a sealant. Modge Podge was too wet for what I made. I used illustration board and heavy magazine paper found in museum catalogs and other heavy paper magazines. Of course you have to work outside or in a well ventilated area with that product, but the beautiful thing about it is as the piece ages, a beautiful crackle comes alive making the piece look aged and Victorian. I’m heading over to YouTube and look for some oragami tuts. I haven’t done any in years and you’ve inspired me. Thanks for sharing.

I know what you mean about keeping a special piece for yourself. My problem, if you want to call it that, is that recently when I wear my special piece someone wants to buy it. No problem. I just get to pick another favorite design to wear 🙂

I do use a sealant, which has the extra benefit of making the bead sturdier as well as water resistant. It helps the bead stand up to use plus it prevents the paper from tearing when I ream it to put it on jewelry findings. I use Mod Podge, the formula made especially for paper. But I will warn you that your edges must be thoroughly glued down; otherwise, the liquid coating will deform the paper, making it gap and buckle.

I also love playing with paper too, but I haven’t made jewelry with it. Do you put any sealant on the paper?

Sometimes I am not sure what is my favorite part: making the jewelry or playing around with all that beautiful paper!
Thanks for the opportunity to share with other jewelry makers! This is such a great community!

And I can see that they’d be nice to wear for dressy-ish occasions, especially when you want to show your sense of style. What a wonderful, lightweight way to put a pop of color in your jewelry!
