I started Kumihimo about two years ago. My pieces are a mix of macrame cords/ribbons in different textures and bright colors. I did my first beaded Kumihimo necklace last week and was surprised how easy it was and the final product was a piece I am really proud of. I was always hesitant to do with beads because I thought it was going to be hard. So now I have another technique to I corporate into my collection. And yes, Kumihimo is addictive.

Your work is beautiful and so encouraging to a beginner. I agree with you about using wire to wrap around the ends for a more secure setting. I’m a little confused about your answer to Sheila about how you space your beads. Are the 2 strands with dagger/3 seed beads/dagger placed right next to each other in the beginning (like both in the west position) or is one in the east and one in the west position? And for a necklace (I’ve just made bracelets), how long do you recommend each strand to be?

One strand has an even number of daggers, the other has 1 less dagger on it, if that makes sense to you.

Do you space them on that cord with seed beads between? Thanks!

This is a method that I would love to try at some point. Looks like you are a master at it!

To Rena – it was not a conscious reference, but since I AM still crazy after all these years, it was probably an unconscious influence 🙂

To Sheila, at my endings I use an eye pin (either ready made or made by me using either 20 or 22 gauge wire), poke a small hole in the C-Lon (S-Lon) and thread the wire through and clamp against the thread. I then use Zap a Gap glue to seal the thread and cut off the excess. Then I add an endcap over the wire and perform a wirewrapped loop to secure everything together. I am also nervous by just gluing my endings to the braid; I feel the wire makes it more secure.

To Dana – Kumihimo looks difficult BUT once you have the rhythm down, the only thing that is “boring” is the actual stringing of the beads on your 8 strands. Granted a bracelet will take me about 2 hours start to finish (including clasps, etc) and a necklace about 5-6 hours (maybe longer if my cats play with the bobbins) 🙂 It really is addicting and if you are a visual learner like me, there are a number of YouTube video tutorials that will help you – even Aunties Beads has a tutorial series on their website on Kumihimo to help you (it’s free).

I think of Kumihimo as being like sudoku; impossible for me to do-my mind rebels…

Her pieces are spectacular. I checked out her Etsy store for more of her collection

I need to make one with beads because this is stunning! I hesitate because I feel insecure about finishing the ends by gluing them inside the caps. I would hate to sell something that falls apart. Do you just use E6000 or super glue?

This is really a gorgeous necklace. (Also I love your title for this post – is that Paul Simon’s influence? 🙂 )
