ParaWire.com sells bare copper wire that does patina nicely. Search for bare copper wire specifically. I just did a comparison for prices between ParaWire.com, RioGrande.com and Metalliferous.com and found that ParaWire has the best prices, although Rio Grande gives more wire on their spools. Metalliferous is higher priced but shipping to the west coast may be what is costing more.

For smaller amounts of wire and variety of metals, WireJewelry.com really is wonderful. They periodically have wire sales for base metals like copper, brass, nickel silver, etc. that are worth waiting for if you can hold out. They also offer wire in smaller lengths that most sellers don’t.

For bronze and antique bronze, I’ve purchased from Unkamen on Etsy. They are priced well and offer quality wires.

Hardware and ranching supply stores here have not just wire in the wire and fencing aisle, but look where the big spools are – I discovered 4, 6 and 8 gauge grounding wire. It’s pure copper, and can’t be beat for big, chunky rings. I’ve found 6 gauge brass used in spots on the farm (dug up and already patina’d) but haven’t found that yet in retail. If you need something fatter than 20 gauge but not as heavy as grounding wire, go to your hardware store and look for Romex electric. Three strands per section, looks like 16 or 14 gauge, you’ll have to strip off the insulation but it’s already half or dead soft, pure copper. And for interesting and different forms, onlinemetals.com has random packs of shapes and sizes for affordable prices.

If you want to oxidize/patina your wire, be careful to buy “raw” wire. Avoid anything that says coated or anti-tarnish because it won’t oxidize. So Parawire or Artistic wire as examples are not suitable.

Wire Jewelry has consistently had the best prices for both plain & enameled copper and brass. They have a huge assortment of most ALL wire, especially if you belong and get the 25% off member price. I get 95% of all my wire from there. It’s also the cheapest price and largest selection I’ve found for silver plated wire and square wire.

I find that metalliferous.com consistently has the widest selection and the best prices on everything metal. I love just browsing their site just to see what is new. You can buy wire by the foot or the ounce. Silver, copper, brass, steel, aluminum, etc. Plus sheet metal, stampings, casting grain, chain, findings, metal beads, etc.

ParaWire.com has Copper, Brass, Nickel Silver, Bronze, Aluminum and Stainless Steel. Their colored wire is enameled aluminum which doesn’t chip as easily as other craft wire. They also have memory wire, soft -flex beading wire, excellent silver-filled. The wire can come as half round, square, twisted or round. You can get 250 ft bulk rolls which cost even less per foot. They have 6″ x 6″ flat stock as at good prices as well.

Ace hardware has always been a go to for me for 18 gauge and above, Rio Grande has a great selection of wire and you can pretty much buy any length and they carry the heavier gauge wire..

If I am doing a project that doesn’t require a whole lot of wire and It’s just 20 or 18 Ga. round, I pick up my copper wire at my local ACE hardware store. If I need square or half round, Rio Grande has what I need. You end up with a lot of wire that will last through many projects.

I buy most of my copper and brass wire at hardware stores. It’s less expensive than craft stores. And, the raw metal seems to patina better than some of the coated craft wire. It’s seems difficult to find 20 gauge, but they almost always have 24 g and 18 and 16 g.

Also, if you do online searches for “brass jewelry wire” or “copper jewelry wire”, you’ll find a lot of additional good sources to explore. Happy wireworking! 🙂
