When I make jewelry with vintage buttons I like to wrap them in a piece of filigree, which can be formed to fit the shape of the button.

I like both of these necklaces! The beads and chain work especially well with the blue and gold button in the top photo.

Also I love the touch of posing the blue vintage button necklace on a handwritten poem of Wynken, Blynken, and Nod.

I haven’t done much work with standard bezels. Instead, I often create wire settings for things I want to turn into pendants. That way you can have a nice secure setting that’s sized perfectly for your focal item.

Buttons would be fairly easy to wire-wrap, as long as they aren’t too small. And if the back of the button has a shank, you could run the wire through it as a way to make the pendant even sturdier.

I’ve also seen some wonderful bezels made from seed beads, and even from leather.

Maybe instead of the usual type of bezel, you might explore making your own bezels from a variety of alternative things – with each bezel especially suited for the button it holds?
