This was done in seed beads, with Bezelling in a Shell on the Headdress. I learn to do this from going to websites like YouTube tutorials on Beading Embroidery, that offer learning to embroider with seed beads on felt and bezel in a cabochon. Hope that is helpful.

I’ve tried to do this and had the same problem. I found that reducing the number of seed beads to reduce as stated above is the best way but I would also add, going back through a seed bead with a half hitch knot also keeps the beads from slipping.
Of course it’s important to have either invisible thread (like Wildfire Green) or monofilament fishing line, helps to hide the stitch.

You need REALLY tight tension to get the beads flush against the stone.

One way is to skip a spot. Another way is to switch to smaller beads.
