Rena, Thanks so much for your helpful articles with so much valuable information for all of us to add to our resources. i liked the scanner idea! Easier to stage than using a digital camera for sure. Love the background areas ideas and tips and using the box and cover to not crunch the elements and keep out room light! Always a lot of good tips and shared information from you!

Wow Rena, this is pure genius. Who woulda thunk it, lol. You have the most amazing tips. Did you purchase another scanner yet? If not, I can recommend anything by Epson. Also, the Cannon Scanners are awesome. I’m going to give this a try tomorrow and hopefully finally post to this wonderful JMJ community. Thank you for sharing this great information.

Loved your hints on using the scanner. I have a friend who uses a scanner exclusively. Although I have a light box set up, I am going to try this. I especially liked the idea of the box/object to support the lid; the suggestion to use plastic sheet to protect the scanner glass from getting scratched and the overall cover to block light.

Hi;

I have used the scanner idea previously, but your hints on covering the entire scanner with a dark cloth was fabulous. I used a canvas frame to cover my pieces when scanning but that didn’t always work. Can’t wait to try this method this weekend. Your hints and suggestions are just what I have been looking for as I am having my website professionally rebuilt. Thank you.

Hello Everyone,
I was just playing around the other day with my smart-phone. (I’m a lucky mother. My son gave me a reconditioned iphone for my birthday.) For days I had been struggling to take photos of my gem stone rings and decided to snap a few shots with the phone…Whalah! The pictures were perfect. There is even a free lightbox app you can download to get that “magazine” look. The pics were a hundred times better than the shots taken with my camera. The scanner idea in Rena’s article is genius, but not for rings. Thought I would just share the phone idea. Never assume the limitations of a gadget–sometimes smaller is better 🙂

Been agonizing over taking pictures of my jewelry and haven’t because my digital doesn’t take great closeups of small items. I would never have thought of using my scanner. Thanks so much, Rena. I love this idea and will begin to utilize it ASAP.

Geweldig,tijdens het lezen meteen aan de slag met oorbellen gewoon even niets veranderen aan mijn scan eerst uittesten en het werkt! Wat ik gelijk zie is dat het sieraad is bewogen ?Hoe is dat nu mogelijk ,komt het omdat ik aan de werktafel zit te scannen en opslaan tijdens de scan.Weet jij daar een antwoord op Rena.Ik vind het een meg oplossing voor mijn cabs.

How is that possible now, it is because I scan and save during the scan. You know there’s an answer Rena. I think it’s a solution for my cabs.

I am so very pleased to have come across this article about using a scanner to photograph jewelry! I just did a little test scan of one of my pieces. It came out wonderfully, and that was just a basic scan. I can’t wait to see what I get when I tweak the photos, using your suggestions. I’m no photographer, and was very frustrated at the pictures I was taking of my pieces. I’m gearing up to start a little jewelry business, and find this scanning process to be a major advantage. Thank you!
