I think it really depends on how much you’re willing to “spend”. Can the discount be applied to ANY item, or only within a certain price range? I’ve been considering it for a while. Not sure which way to go though. Hm…

The gift has a higher perceived value than the actual cost and frequently the customer will purchase more items than originally planned. I had some frequent purchase cards made up so when someone buys 5 items, they get the free earrings.
I have found that a $/% coupon works very well for current customers to send a new customer (referral) my way. Sometimes they personally bring the “referral” and both end up buying.

Either a code written on the back of a business card ( or written on on a special thank you note) and included with the order, or emailed as part of the invoice or shipping notification. This way, it’s not just a reward for return customers, but is encouraging return customers 😉 As for how much, that’s up to you, but a mere 10 -15% off seems to be a generous incentive, or perhaps free shipping ? Or you can mix it up… have a few different discounts or offers, write them out on paper or something and toss them into a jar, then close your eyes and pull one out when needed and create the offer for them 🙂 Or you can do it in stages – first order send out a 5-10% coupon, second/third order send off a 10-15%, then for a fourth order, maybe offer a choice of the 10-15% discount, or a free keychain/purse charm/earrings ( depending on your price points and what you have in your shop 😉 )
