Today I ordered my first metal stamping equipment. My first time venturing away from beads, but I love your work! I’m going to start small, labeling some things I already have but I’ve seen some amazing things I’d like to try. Thank you for inspiring me!

Hi Jean! It would probably be a good idea to contact the manufacturer of the acrylic finish. Explain how you’re using the finish, and ask about safety, toxicity or skin reactions of their product when used on jewelry.

By doing this I guess I thought it would be ok if it touched your skin. Any other suggestions?

Jean, thanks for asking! I’m guessing Nancy made that recommendation because some hardware metals may cause allergic reactions; and because zinc, galvanized steel, (and possibly other hardware metals) may be toxic.

Thanks,

Thank you for your lovely comment, Brenda! For the double ball chain on the Industrial Pendant, I used a single long length of ball chain to wrap around the neck (and through the pendant bail) twice before fastening it with a standard ball chain connector / clasp. For the earwires with the little ball / blob at the end, you can use a torch, as described in How to Make Your Own Argentium Sterling Ball Pins.

On the metal washer necklace with the double ball chain, what type of closure do you use? Also, on your copper patina earrings, how do you make the ear wires with the little blob or ball on the end? You are so generous to share your vast skills and knowledge. Thank you so much. Brenda

I made a great keychain one time with a screw, nuts, and bolts–it reminds me a lot of this, actually. I’m going to dig through my hardware to see if I have any of the materials left and I may make a variation of this. Thanks for sharing! (PS–the keychain was a gift with a note that said, “I’m Nuts About You”–I thought it was cute!)

Erika, the chain I used for this pendant is a ball chain. I liked the darkened, industrial look of the chain for this piece. Also, you may be able to tell from the photos that I’ve used a double strand of this chain. The washer bail is so much larger than a regular pendant bail that it made a single strand of the chain look wimpy by comparison. So I felt that a double strand looked sturdier and more in proportion.

Thanks for asking! 🙂
