Jewelry in a Can!

Jewelry in a can is a nifty way to not only mail jewelry, but it also gives the receiver a lovely reusable container which will remind your customer/friend of your business in the days to come.
Ever since my daughter, Anna, brought home the new can opener, I knew it would open up worlds of possibilities for me.
The new safe-cut or sidecut can opener from “Good Cook” now opens cans without the dangerous sharp edges and also makes the cover replaceable, not in a sealing sort of way, but in a replace the cover sort of way.
Since I haven’t graduated to sending my jewelry in boxes yet, I’m always looking for some practical way to protect them from danger when I mail them.
For anyone wanting to try this, first buy a “Good Cooks Safe-Cut or Sidecut” can opener. We bought ours at WalMart.
Print out a label. A regular soup can takes the width of a typing sheet, so if you print out two photos on a regular sheet of paper, with only a little trimming at the bottom, you have two labels.
Add a little note or a business card, maybe a nice pouch, place in a padded mailing bag and you’re all set.
Recycling will always be in style and important for our world. The more we keep out of the landfills the better, right?
This also helps keep business costs down, which helps us all.
Larger cans, of course, could be used for large orders.
So, by using soup cans, I save money for both my customer and my business, remind people of my great business, recycle responsibly and have fun being creative!

Thanks for your comments. It’s been fun “making something out of nothing”. Tuna cans work well too. They can be wrapped with a nice ribbon and are great for smaller items.

I sell all green product jewelry and will want to use this idea but how do you seal the cans for mailing??? tape? or do you seal them? Can you give a bit more specifics on how to do this?
Thanks for the great comments!
by: Kari
Hi,
Thanks for all the great comments and excellent question about how to seal the top.
Yes, I simply tape it shut. Or sometimes I get “techie” by placing a small red cord/string around the place where the cover and can meet and cover it with scotch tape leaving an end of the cord exposed. When the exposed cord is pulled, it rips through the tape and opens the can. You could add a tag: “Pull here to open” or some such comment.
I hope that helps.
And as I mentioned in a previous comment, tuna cans work well too. Just be sure they are really clean and don’t smell “tunaie” anymore.
A nice ribbon can be taped around the tuna can covering the sides and also a ribbon can be tied around from bottom to top.
Sometimes I cut my logo photo in a circle and stick on the top too with double sided tape. That makes the top of the can a little prettier.
Intriguing!

I am intrigued by your pack -in-a-can ideas, and I may give the idea a try myself! I love the recycling aspect. I assume you remove the old label first. Any can-cleaning ideas? Unfortunately, cat-food cans are just about the only cans we use, so I would want to soak them in something after cleaning to be really sure of them. I am imagining sending my hard work out into the world with eau-de-super supper, or tuan and egg scent! Hmmm, maybe bleach water. White vinegar? much more environmental! If I give it a try, I’ll report back!
Keep recycling!

Way to go! Fantastic. I’d like to try that idea to deliver my jewelry in to customers or even keep design ideas that I need right at the work table with me.
I bought a lot of decorative papers not too long ago and dabbled into making my own boxes. I was trying to learn, so it wasn’t much fun trying to teach myself. Probably would have been easier had someone been hand on hand to show me. Oh well, all those papers can be put to good use now without me getting frustrated with the cuts required to make the box folds.
So Clever!

What a clever and eco-friendly way to package your wares! I will definitely have to give this a try. Especially to package small things come Christmas time.
Best of luck to you and thanks for sharing!

What a wicked idea, and very creative, I love it…. I have been trying to find some eco friendly packaging for ages, but to be honest so far nothing has inspired me very much (maybe im just hard to please lol), but this is an excellent idea…..Thank you!
Great idea and another idea…
by: Mucarito
Wow! I have that can opener and yet it never dawned in me to try your idea. If I may add another suggestion, holes can be drilled at the sides and wire added to make a handle. the wire can be curled and a cute bow added. The jewelry item can be wrapped in tissue paper to match the bow color.
Nice Package

I LOVE your idea! I am very into recycling but had never thought of this. Good job!
I am on a pretty tight budget though (I’ve just started selling my jewelry and am still in college) so does this make thie shipping alot higher with the added weight of the can? About how much does it cost to ship?
Thanks!

CAN I dig this!

Wonderful idea! I’ve used cans for many different things, but this is new to me and I love it. We use very little cans at home but the few that we do, I can now recycle in a whole new way. Thanks for your tip!
