One of the rules for wholesale is to not take your work into shops but to approach via postcard or email with a photo of your work. A lot of the up front work is finding venues that are good for your designs vs cold calling and all that scary stuff. A lot of the work is in the background, taking photo’s, making line sheets etc… Yes, you have to develop your wholesale prices and you do not get the retail markup, but you are essentially paying a retailer to sell for you. It might be your answer….

Hi Vicky, earning a percentage of sales is probably more motivating than an hourly fee – and could result in your friend selling more of your jewelry. Also, many people love to be paid in jewelry from your inventory, or a custom piece of jewelry, or some studio time with you helping them make jewelry. If your friend is interested in that type of payment, you might come to an arrangement that’s part jewelry and part percentage of the sales she makes. 🙂

I have one who could sell ice to Eskimos as she’s a retired marketing person. Only problem is I’m not sure how to work it with the remuneration. Should I offer her a flat fee per hour or a percentage of sales?
