I tried several methods of applying the patterns to the metals. The last effort I was going to try was using the PnP Blue and hope the patterns stuck. This is the blog post that finally pushed me over the edge to take one last stab: http://deborahreadcom.blogspot.com/2012/07/etching-copper-pipe.html

I searched for free images, alterred and edited them in GIMP (free image editing software) for high resolution. Printed the images to the PnP Blue using a laser printer (must have melted powder, inkjet doesn’t work). Cut the patterns and used a regular iron to transfer the patterns to the freshly sanded/washed surfaces. Used ferric acid purchased from Frys Electronics. I didn’t use any heat like the blog described, and within 2 hours had a pretty deep etch on the first few. As the ferric acid weakened the etching took longer, but they all turned out really well. I hope this is helpful to anyone that is interested in trying it out!

Sounds difficult to me and a lot of work so kudos to you for the great results you got.

These turned out fabulous and definitely do not look like it was your first time up to bat! 🙂

No one would guess these fab cuffs were a first-time effort! They look very professional, and I love the variety in your etched designs. If you put them on display, I predict that lots of people will want to try and buy them! 🙂

Any suggestions? I’d love to try it on some findings for necklaces and bracelets.
