I started on Etsy after I lost my “day” job in 2008. I was desperate for sales! Two years went by and practically nothing in the way of income! (This was my first Etsy shop “EspritMystique.”) Then, a new “day-job” came along and I was able to relax and enjoy making things again, in my spare time. Voila! My “personal” creations started selling very well, in fact I had repeat sales on the same designs! Once I listed things that I truly “ENJOYED” making, others picked up on the “love” and bought them! I continued on with the “tribal” theme I have been passionate about for years, instead of trying to make what I thought would sell! My new Etsy shop name is easier to remember and more in line with my tribal theme. So, I’m finally able to sell what I love making!

Hand-slap to forehead as the light bulb came on!

I’m so glad you figured it out, too!

What timing! I am constantly trying to reassure myself that if I make something less complicated, I could get more sales. Everyone who sees what we make and sell usually likes it. But, my style is also eclectic and I try many styles. Just recently, I decided that I love, love, creating pieces from wire and gemstones. So, if the sales come in volume I will welcome them but,
if not right now, I will keep on working it. Thank you for sharing your story
and keep making the beautiful pieces you show us.

I ‘ve been making jewelry for years, but the sudden explosion of diy, has really got me down. It seems that a new trend rushes to the forefront every day! It is so hard to stay true and keep going along the creative path that is all mine. I may be a pretty good artist, but I am a terrible salesperson! I am putting up a picture of your beautiful whale song in my studio to remind me to stick with my vision.

Thank you so much for your article!!! I have been going through the same thing recently. I started out making jewelry using gemstones and had a lot of compliments. Someone even said she thought of Lia Sophia jewelry when she saw my pieces. But then I started noticing a lot of other types of jewelry being sold on Etsy and Artfire and thought I should try something different. Stamped jewelry, minimalist jewelry and even recycled jewelry. But my heart still lies with the gemstones so I think I will go back to where I first started. Your pieces are beautiful!
