The paper beads are coated with at least five coats of clear nail polish, over multiple coats of Modge Podge or clear Elmer’s glue.

They will not require the chemical cleaners that metal beads will, which could damage your paper beads. Venetian Murano glass beads lined with sterling silver or 24K gold foil are beautiful too if you can afford them.

An alternative would be to use oxidized silver (or silver-plated pewter) beads which are supposed to look dark and rustic. You get a similar effect with antiqued gold-plated pewter.

All these are widely available. Good luck. I love paper beads.

I don’t really have any one particular brand to mention as far as findings but I do have a website where I showcase my handmade paper beads if you would like to take a look since you are just getting started with making paper beads!

Eventually, any metal will tarnish, except for pure gold and platinum. Therefore, care and storage of your metal beads is very important. And if you’re using quality components, the care you take will be worth it as you’ll have a piece of wearable art that will last forever. Just make sure that you pass on this information to your customer and they won’t be disappointed.

I like using antique copper, brass or gunmetal because these don’t tarnish and I like the vintage look with the paper beads.

Stainless is a little pricier but still a lot less than sterling silver.

It’s a bit cheaper than sterling and it’s a really thick durable coating much thicker than plating. Search Artbeads, Fusion beads or fire mountain gems for them

I just love making my paper beads, and I agree they can be very beautiful. I may decide to sell some at a craft show my friend is working in May. But for now, I’m making them for fun and to give to friends…improving and perfecting the process and beads as I try new things. I feel I am making a professional grade of bead, being careful to seal them well and paying attention to detail. I’m concerned that anything I use with them (especially if I do sell some)…findings, etc. be nice and wear well but not cost a fortune. As this is my first venture into making jewelry, I have been buying just what I need at the moment from Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc. (findings, seed beads, and very small silver and gold beads). However since I only started this hobby in November, I have very little feed back as to how well my bracelets are holding up. Thanks for anymore input!

It pays to use good quality findings, not cheap metals. I started by reading tutorials on sites like ArtBeads and Fire Mountain to see what findings they are using in their designs and how they look. That even helps you with sizes. Silver plated 22 gauge jump rings are a good start. Be sure you know how to open and close them correctly. You can find a tutorial to show you that. I also second the value of paper beads which are quite beautiful mixed with other kinds of beads. Have fun, Karen.

I make paper beads for some of my pieces and my customers love them. They are very good sellers! In my opinion a good paper bead is worth more than some store bought beads because of the handcrafted nature. Your creative ability, your time, and your effort are worth something!

It comes in many colors, and the silver and gold especially I use for many things and it does not tarnish. As for beads that don’t tarnish, try the Czech glass beads in silver and gold, or many seed type beads instead of metal beads. Hope that helps.
