Cindi, great sources of inspiration – especially your strategy of following trends that match the jewelry you make. 🙂

It’s important to follow trends that match the kind of jewelry you make. I also (don’t laugh) play a FB game called Covet Fashion and have seen many new trends in accessories show up in the game and then see people wearing them.

They are right on trend as far as fashion goes. You can always adapt their pieces to fit in with what you make.

I try to watch for photos from the fashion shows for coming seasons. They’ll show some jewelry and even though I try to stay with my style, it gives me an idea of trends to work into my pieces in a subtle way.

I will check out the Pantone colors for the season, but I decided to design with my ideal customers in mind, and my demographic tends to like things that are either unusual and original or classic enough to work for many years. Unless you want to design for a young crowd, I would keep the “trendiness” understated.

I use it for design ideas and to see what’s currently trending. Have been able to stay ahead of other jewelry vendors in my area and keeps my jewelry fresh.

It is important though, to develop your style, your voice and motivation as a designer and not necessarily worry about what is being done around you. Sure, if the trend is for smaller earrings, now might not be the time to promote big shoulder dusters. But hey, if you make to die for shoulder dusters that will be the next big fashion statement, go for it!

In a town where I used to live, mainstream trends didn’t catch on there. Also, things that were trendy in that town were often just a local trend, but NOT popular elsewhere. So if you’re selling your jewelry globally vs. locally, the trends may be different.

Maybe the best approach would be to ask your customers (and prospective customers) what jewelry styles, lengths, colors, metals, etc. they like – and create your own trends for them. 🙂

Find what you and your customers like and develop a niche for that market. Good luck!

You may sell some, but then if the trend ends quickly you end up with a lot of unsold inventory. If you want to be up on trends check out fashion magazine websites, this way you don’t have to spend too much on buying magazines. I’ve read that keeping an eye on what the female newscasters are wearing is helpful. Are they long necklaces, short necklaces, statement pieces, etc.? It also seems that once a trend has reached a mass produced store like Walmart, it’s pretty much on its way out.
