PayPal charges 2.7 percent per transaction. On a $15 charge, it’s a difference of half a cent between the services.

Square has an incredible interface that can help your business grow, especially if you plan on expanding and use invoices and contracts.

I read that Square charges a 2.75% fee on every transaction. Did PayPal also charge a fee? Did you have to set it up as a business account under PayPal?

Both worked fabulously. I absolutely loved the Paypal card reader. My smartphone even enabled the customer to sign the document using their forefinger.

Not much, granted, but it works. Since I charge tax, (My state law – you aren’t supposed to “include” it in the price. Don’t ask me why.) I also carry coins. Pennies – 50; Nickles – 20; Dimes – 15; Quarters – 10. Plus I include the Square. At the end of each show I reload the paper – taking out the extra, filling in the blanks where needed. At the end of the YEAR, I take out the extra change and leave myself with the original amount. As you can see, it’s not much – $55.50 but it works. Very, very rare to run out of change and even if I do, usually the customer has another bill to use I can break. I also accept checks. I’ve not yet had one come back.

Paypal: paypal.com/webapps/mpp/credit-card-reader
Square: squareup.com/
They both send you little plug-in swipe card readers you pop into your iphone or ipad. I don’t know if they work with other mobile phones or not! People really seem to appreciate not having to spend cash! =D

I, too, have included tax in my prices so as not to deal with coin. It sounds like everyone who has responded is giving me about the same information and I sincerely appreciate it!!

You’re right Connie, I’m sure someone would help out if it’s needed too.
All your responses have helped me narrow down what I most likely will need, without bringing an armored truck.

We set it up with coin + $1 bills = $50, $30 in $5 bills, and $20 in tens. It was rare we needed more bills, but we’d occasionally break open a roll of change.

When we go to a show, we include the sales tax in our jewelry prices so we don’t need any coin. I’ve never needed more than that $100 set up till at a show yet (granted, we’ve only been doing shows for a couple years).

I hope this helps.

Beth

We never needed more than that. I started going with the $100 to start the craft shows and always found that I had much more than I actually needed each time. Since I started using Square, I found that I need even less change. Half my sales are debit and credit now.

I got 100 ones fro the bank, 10 fives and 5 tens. After many shows I finally removed 50 of those original ones. It seems that whatever I have in the till is fine. I simply keep the seed money for the next show, removing amounts over about $170. Just remember, while other vendors may be competing for business, at the same time it’s been my experience that they will also help out if you just ask. So don’t fret about the change on hand. Take a reasonable amount, and stop worrying. It’ll be fine, and if it isn’t, believe me, someone will help out. Good luck!!!

I never used to take along twenty’s but I had 2 shows in a row last year that someone paid for a $10 with a $50 bill and it wiped me out of change so now I throw a couple of those in too. Good Luck!

I also take square, and that cuts down quite a bit on the amount of cash I need to have on hand, because at a lot of the shows I do use square for a lot of my transactions.
