That’s it, I drop it there. If they are further interested, I’ll let them ask me.

Just wanted to add that just like making jewelry, this also takes a little practice before it seems smooth and comfortable!
The first few times will feel odd, but then it gets to be so fun, and often leads to wonderful conversations and yes, often sales.

The fact that someone likes the piece I am wearing enough to comment is always exciting for me! I instantly want to jump into a conversation with them to find out what they like. My husband who is calm and rational (my opposite!) tells me to take a breath, smile, and calmly say, “Thank you! I had fun designing it!” Also, don’t ever tell someone, “Oh, that was so easy to make.” This may decrease the value of your work in their eyes. Instead, try saying replacing “easy” with “fun.” Handmade items take time to be designed, attention to detail, and work to be put together. Be enthusiastic and be happy, but at the same time don’t be degrading to your craft in order to make a sale or justify a price. Your pieces would not exist without your creativity!

And when they say “oh”, I say “Yes, it’s me.” Then I tell them that my designs are one of a kind and if I were to make another necklace like this one, it would be different. With that, it makes the customer feel unique. Some of my designs do come from kits, but I have never been asked that.

Their phrases are very nice. I particularly like adding the word “designer”. I always have business cards in my pocket. I don’t like to buy pants without a pocket. 😉

I made it myself!” which is usually followed by “really?” and that’s when I point out that I also made my bracelet, ring, hairpin, etc. I’m so proud and enthusiast of my work, I don’t hesitate to thank people for noticing. Find a way to lean towards being confident rather than arrogant.

If they are the slightest bit more interested, I give them my card. If you are trying to sell your jewelry, then you have to – well – sell it sometimes! I think if you say you’re the designer then they won’t think that you made it from a kit.

I’m glad you like my work.” Or, “Thank you. I love wire wrapping cabochons. Do you like handcrafted jewelry?” And if they carry the conversation further, “Let me give you my card.” And make sure your card is handy; no fumbling.

Don’t be ashamed of marketing yourself. The next person who compliments you could be your biggest customer if they knew you sold jewelry.
