Even if it protects the gold, sooner or later the spray coating itself may start to peel off, here and there. Then, if it looks “ragged,” you will have the job of figuring out how to peel off the remaining spray coat.
You might start by waxing the piece — if you have any Renaissance wax, that would be a good place to start, since it is used in museums to preserve items of value. It would be easy to replace the wax coating as needed.
