They also sell metal (copper, brass and aluminum) sheets by the inch in various weights. Look for similar shops in your city.

I’ve used the metal sheets/blanks from Michaels, Joann’s and Hobby Lobby. BUT you have to remove the film that is over some of them. I usually used steel wool. BUT sometimes you will find that the film is actually the color they put over the base metal. It’s a hit and miss thing. When it’s on sale, it’s worth trying out, especially if you are using alcohol inks for the first time.

Good luck & have fun!

BeadFX is in Toronto. They provide great online service. Also consider looking through the classes here and on show and bead society websites as there will be links to the instructors’ websites who would also be great sources of information. I know there’s a big bead show in Victoria every year, and there must be something going on in Vancouver. Beth Clinton of Flirt Designs sells supplies and etching/stamping presses and demos sheet metal techniques. That’s who I learned from. She’d be someone to contact.

Hope this gets you started.

Hi Gaye-Lynne, I often use 22 or 24 gauge sheet metal.

In my Coloring Metal with Alcohol Ink Tutorial, I purchased 24-gauge metal sheet, large enough to make 2 pendant blanks:
one 40mm x 50mm (1.57″ x 1.97″)
one 30mm x 40mm (1.18″ x 1.57″)
You can get metal sheets for jewelry making at most of the major online jewelry suppliers; I usually get mine at Monsterslayer.com , but I think most Canada jewelry suppliers would carry metal sheet.
I used yellow brass.
To see how I cut, punched, textured, and smoothed the metal, see my Cold Connection – Easy Riveted Pendant Tutorial.
